shizuokasirituserizawakeisukebijutukann

The Shizuoka Municipal Serizawa Keisuke Museum was established when the leading figure of Japan’s dyeing world, Keisuke Serizawa (1895~1984) donated works and collections to his home city Shizuoka City. Since opening in 1981, it has continued activities to convey the feats of Serizawa’s art by widely introducing it to the world through various project exhibitions, collection of of work preservations, and research. It has attracted many fans of dyeing inside and outside of Japan as a museum of dyeing artists, rare in Japan.

Buildings designed by architect Seiichi Shirai (1905~1983) also received attention by visitors. Located in the corner of Toro Park famous as the ruins of the Yayoi period, this building constructed specifically with natural materials such as stone, wood, and water as if nature melted naturally into the atmosphere of the ruins, is a masterpiece that exercised Seiichi Shirai’s individuality perfectly. A massive outer wall made of piled stones. A gradual shingle-roof It directs a relaxed atmosphere appropriate for a place of appreciation, with the exhibition room with a coffered ceiling made from plain Japanese oak, also with warm traces of hatchets.
